Brooke Kidd said her performing arts center, Joe’s Movement Emporium, has done more than just bring the arts to Mount Rainier over the past 20 years — it has become part of the city’s identity.
“And that makes me proud, that people feel they are part of the arts,” said Kidd, 46, of Mount Rainier.
The Sue Hess Maryland Arts Advocate of the Year Award recognizes individuals whose arts advocacy benefits not only their communities but the region and state as a whole, said John Schratwieser, executive director of Maryland Citizens for the Arts.
“[The award committee] chose Brooke primarily because they were so impressed with the length of service that she has done there at Joe’s Movement Emporium but [also] really just about the community responsive nature of the organization,” Schratwieser said. “It really represents all the best that the arts are in our community in terms of providing services to our residents and meeting the needs of residents while providing access to arts and culture.”
