Wellons unpacks the word “pretty” in new album and opens her process up to community
Singer, songwriter, performer Tamara Wellons will be in residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium November 7-12, 2016 launching her new tour: “The Well-Water Tour – A Talk, A Show, A Party”. Wellons and her guitarist Zach Cutler host a free Song Writing Workshop November 5 from 2 – 4 pm open to all. Performances of her new album “Pretty” will take place Saturday, November 12th at 8 pm and Sunday, November 13th at 4 pm in Joe’s theater located at 3309 Bunker Hill Road in Mount Rainier, MD. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $10 for children. The residency is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.
Tamara Wellons has performed at Joe’s several times over the past 15 years. In 2014 Wellons worked with Joe’s through the Art Lives Here initiative to develop community engagement strategies that include live performances outside of beauty shops in the Gateway Arts District. She will continue this work with the November Song Writing Workshop, introducing the community to innovative new ways to approach song-writing resulting in a community sing.
For her performances Wellons has proposed a mix of live and recorded music, projection, and dance featuring six musicians. Imaginative new theatrical staging will be developed with the assistance of Joe’s Executive Director, Brooke Kidd. The Well-Water Tour features songs from “Pretty”, Wellons’ new concept album. Throughout the performance audience will be involved through song and conversation to explore topics of racial history, specifically how history has been conveniently “prettied” up or glossed over; cultural concepts of beauty; and self-esteem and confidence in our perceptions of body image.
“The project directly support our goals of establishing a more robust presenting presence and cultivating new audiences, providing dynamic engagement and high-quality, meaningful cultural experiences for our community,” said Brooke Kidd, executive director of Joe’s about the program. “Joe’s normal artistic programming will be diversified and augmented through this project.”
