About NextLOOK

Established in 2014 through a partnership between The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by performing artists based in DC, Maryland and Virginia who are looking to incorporate audience feedback into their creative process.

Selected through a yearly application process, NextLOOK artists are awarded:

  • A stipend based on a weekly fee for each artist in the group (not to exceed 10 people total).
  • Five (5) days in the theatre of Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, MD for project design, rehearsal, audience engagement and performance. NextLOOK artists must present at least one public showing of their work and at least one audience engagement opportunity.
  • The opportunity to collaborate with staff of The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium to construct innovative methods of deepening the audience’s involvement in their creative process.

By removing logistical barriers and providing a sounding board for artists creating new work, NextLOOK invests in the regional DC/MD/VA arts ecology and creates an accessible, exploratory environment that connects intriguing artists with adventurous audiences. All performances are held at Joe’s Movement Emporium and are pay what you wish.

Criteria for consideration include:

  • Exciting audience engagement plans or concepts
  • Clarity of residency design
  • Strong support materials

Artists who are selected to be part of NextLOOK must value the opportunity to engage with community members in a variety of settings. Audience engagement must be designed to ignite interaction and participation with the artist(s) in conversation that provides questions, feedback and ideas about the work in progress. Artists from across the performing arts – including dance, theatre and music as well as cross-genre collaborations – are encouraged to apply.

For questions about the application process or the NextLOOK program, please contact Megan Pagado Wells, Associate Director of the Artist Partner Program.
