An intimate evening of ancient and contemporary dances of Love and Desire from cultures of the Silk Road
Sunday, February 12th at 7 pm, join Joe’s Movement Emporium in celebrating and fundraising for Silk Road Dance Company, a Joe’s residency artist company, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Dances of desire from Persian, Tajik, Azeri, Uzbek, Uyghur, Georgian, and Arabic cultures set the tone for a romantic evening. Fly away on a magic carpet without ever leaving Maryland! Silk Road Dance Company has been a part of Joe’s since the 2007 opening of the “new Joe’s” on Bunker Hill Road. Silk Road Founder & Artistic Director Laurel Gray remembered touring the abandoned direct mail facility Joe’s now calls home with Joe’s Founder & Executive Director Brooke Kidd. For nearly 10 years now, Silk Road has called Joe’s home with their weekly rehearsals, biennial festivals and treasure trove of costumes and props. Founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Dr. Laurel Victoria Gray – World Dance professor at George Washington University – the award-winning, critically acclaimed Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) presents an extensive repertoire of more than 200 dances from Central Asia, Iran, the Middle East, South Asia, the Caucasus. and beyond. Silk Road Dance Company has given performances internationally in Uzbekistan, Qatar, Singapore, United Kingdom and Canada. About Laurel Victoria Gray, Founder and Artistic Director of Silk Road Dance Company
Internationally recognized dance scholar, choreographer, and performer, Laurel Victoria Gray has devoted her life to mastering dances from Silk Road cultures and beyond. She combines her degrees in history with decades of field research and teaches dance at George Washington University and George Mason ..University. Her scholarly articles have appeared in many publications including the Oxford University Press International Encyclopedia of Dance, the World Encyclopedia of Contemporary Theater, the Encyclopedia of Modern Asia, the Encyclopedia of Women in Islamic Culture, Facts on File, Dance Magazine, and Azerbaijan International as well as foreign dance journals.
