A gentler way to move into wellness at Joe’s

Whether you’re a proud card-carrying AARP member, eyeing your “golden years” doubtfully, recovering from an injury, or simply looking for a gentler way to move into a wellness way of life, Joe’s has two gentle classes for you.

Gentle Yoga Wednesday mornings at 11:30 am with Brooke Kidd and Tai Chi Thursday evenings at 7 pm are wonderful ways to work movement into your weekly wellness routine.

Gentle Yoga | Wednesdays at 11:30 am

The National Institute of Health (NIH) tells us, “studies have shown that exercise provides many health benefits and that older adults can gain a lot by staying physically active. Even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of people who are frail or who have diseases that accompany aging.”

Whether you’re already over the hill or contemplating the climb up, working a fitness aspect into your regular weekly schedule can contribute towards maintaining your health and independence as you age.

Tai Chi | Thursdays at 7 pm

NIH also tells, “when older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it doesn’t happen just because they’ve aged. It’s usually because they’re not active. Lack of physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, and more use of medicines for a variety of illnesses.”

No matter what generation you’re a part of, regular movement experiences can help mange stress and improve your mood. NIH continues, “regular, moderate physical activity can help manage stress and improve your mood. And, being active on a regular basis may help reduce feelings of depression.” While a movement class at Joe’s is no replacement for doctor-recommended mental health therapies and medication, participation in a weekly class provides important connection. Connection between you and your instructor, your fellow classmates, and your inner sense of self.

In 2014 Kathy Shollenberger, a regular yoga student here at Joe’s, shared her beautiful movement story with us. It’s so good, we had to share it again:

Over the course of the past year, Joe’s has become central to my well-being in such a profoundly satisfying way.  I had dabbled in yoga for years, but it always seemed a chore—something that I should do because it was good for me.  I never really got any better at it.  But now I relish the hour and a half I spend with Brooke on Monday evenings.  I get out of my day and into my body.  My confidence has grown and so has my strength.  Thanks to some individual instruction from Brooke, even my plank improved.  She suggested that taking Pilates would complement yoga and consolidate my gains, so I did—bright and early Wednesday mornings with Andrea, another wonderful teacher.  The result of these two weekly classes with instructors who provide expert guidance is a healthier and happier me.  Thanks, Joe’s.

Kathy still regularly attends Brooke’s yoga class on Monday evenings.

MELT Workshop for Yogis and Non-yogis – Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 3:30 – 5 pm

Although Yoga can improve flexibility and muscular strength, it can also cause injuries. Many of the postures used in yoga practice are difficult, if not impossible to execute without compensation. Not just devoted students, many teachers find themselves injured during practice… maybe even you. How do you reduce the risk of yoga injury and recover more quickly if you find yourself injured from your practice? MELT is a simple, easy self-treatment technique that directly affects the part of your body commonly stressed during yoga practice – your connective tissue. Better than modifying postures as we age, we can learn how to truly return our body to its ideal state. MELT is a perfect complement and pro-active solution to your yoga practice whether you are just beginning or were born a yogi. Workshop is open to yogis and non-yogis alike. No previous experience is necessary. MELT kits and rollers are available for sale at the workshop. Participants receive a MELT Map printout for at home treatment.

The Wounded Weekend Warrior — MELT Workshop for Athletes and Non-athletes – Sunday, June 25, 2017 from 3:30 – 5 pm

During an average year, 85% of elite and recreational athletes are injured and 80% of all orthopedic injuries are sports or exercise induced. Too many people experience chronic pain and injury while doing something positive for their health. In this workshop, we will reveal a solution to achieve peak performance without painful side effects of training. Learn to self-treat the missing link just beneath your skin that remains untapped by exercise, yoga, stretching, or myofascial release techniques and gain immediate improvement in range of motion and alignment along with long-term benefits like improved performance and joint resilience. Workshop is open to athletes and non-athletes alike. No previous experience is necessary. MELT kits and rollers are available for sale at the workshop. Participants receive a MELT Map printout for at home treatment.

150822_7417

FOR PARENTS: Yoga Flow with Cynthia Glasser at 5:30 pm is an all levels yoga class includes both flowing sequences linking breath and movement, and stand-alone poses. Build strength, improve the functioning of the body’s systems and restore your soul. Take your focus on a journey inward and find out what makes your body feel good. Tap into your creative, transformative nature and let your practice become what you want it be. Step of your mat feeling refreshed, balanced and content.

DSC01648Cynthia Glasser: With a spirit of playfulness and a dose of inspiration, I seek to help others thrive in life by nurturing body, mind and soul with yoga. In my classes, I encourage students of all levels to remember that their practice is their own experience. I provide lots of alignment cues so that students find freedom to choose how much they want to deepen into poses and movements. Sometimes we find ourselves in a place in life where relearning what simply feels good to our bodies can seem daunting. Yoga can be a powerful vehicle for change and I love that sometimes it can feel effortless and soothing. Through my years of practice, and 3 years teaching, I believe ‘it’s never too late or too early to bring some form of yoga into our lives’ and that the hardest part of a yoga practice can be just getting on your mat (or to class). Creating a supportive and patient environment and making room for some humor, my classes are a place where we can honor our differences and be ourselves. Eclectic/fun musical playlists optional. RYT200 hour certification.

Cost: $12 per adult drop-in. Or use your $100 10-class pass.

Classes are on a drop-in basis, no prior registration is required. If you have never moved at Joe’s before, come prepared to fill out some brief paperwork before the class and be ready to get moving!
