AftaShock-30-1DaRyus O’Neil has been a member of the DMV dance scene since 2006. After first being a member of the Univ. of MD team, Dynamic, he auditioned and was selected as a core member of Culture Shock, and from 2007-2012, he trained and performed in that role. In 2008, he was asked to be co-director of one of the company’s youth troupes, Future Shock; a role he enjoyed for 3 years. In 2011, he because Artistic Director of his own crew, Splittin’ Image, and it was in this role that DaRyus began to really explore his artistic voice. He ‘stopped’ dancing in 2013 when he returned for Doctoral Studies in Cancer Research at Georgetown University. However, that time would become just a break when DaRyus accepted the position as Artistic Director of Afta Shock in August of 2016.

DaRyus throughly enjoys dance and the experiences that dance has afforded him. Aside from performing over the globe, he attributes his personally success to the love and support that his dance family provides. His style is best characterized as Hip hop-plus. His choreography, crafted for expression often incorporates elements of classical and cultural dance styles in addition to hip hop. He believes in the execution of real hip hop as well as the successful marriage of multiple authentic forms of art.

Join Joe’s on Twitter Tomorrow for a Facilitated STEAM Chat

Tomorrow Joe’s Movement Emporium’s twitter account (@joesmovement) is in the capable hands of Sarah AbdulRazak for a facilitated chat on how we can make #art #education work and achieve #STEAM.

Sarah is pursuing her MA in English Literature at Georgetown University and has been working with Joe’s Movement Emporium to help develop a parent-friendly arts-education after-school advocacy guide (coming soon!).

Meet Sarah, in her own words:

Sarah plots stories in her tepee and changes the world on the road. When she is not seesawing between her make-believe plane of theories and what not in her dim lit writer’s crib, she flies off to serve and discover other planes of existence in faraway shores. She comes to Joe’s with a passion for social activism through the arts and scholarship. Stay tuned for her empowering tweets on how art can make a difference and empower the human imagination. The hashtags: #art #education #empower

Be sure to check Sarah’s fabulous #empowering #artsadvocacy tweets over at @joesmovement tomorrow night, May 18 at 8 PM ET.

Artistic Statement

I always wanted to “do” things: take pictures, make music, construct paintings. For me, these activities all seemed like the same thing. I’m a photographer, painter, musician (keyboards), blogger, poet, performer, husband, and father.

After obtaining a B.A. in English and film from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, I moved to San Francisco for a year. There I got my first “real” camera, a Nikon, and learned to process film and make black-and-white prints. In 1972, I moved back to the Washington, D.C. area where I grew up, and eventually started a band, Acrylix. We toured the East Coast from New York to Miami. In 1985, the band reorganized as Shocko Bottom, named after a neighborhood in Richmond, VA. In 1988, I married Nicole Burton, a playwright, and we moved to Riverdale Park, MD. I’ve been a member of the Hyattsville Community Artists Alliance since 1990. My art, whether acrylic paintings, black-and-white photo prints, color photographs, or collaborations with poets, keeps me engaged and leads me to the next project I need to start. The works seem to create themselves in a circle, and we know that a circle has no end.

Photo Blogging

From 2005 to 2011, I created a photo blog, http://www.musicfromthefilm.blogspot.com/, combining photographs with stream-of-consciousness and “found” narrative. The site has received thousands of worldwide hits and includes over 1,000 of my photographs.
