Fulbright Fellow Meghan Abadoo explores Gatekeepers May 5th in Mt. Rainier, MD

NextLOOK Artist, Meghan Abadoo, explores what it takes to be a social gatekeeper

On Friday May 5th at 7 pm Joe’s Movement Emporium, in partnership with The Clarice, presents Meghan Abadoo’s newest work, “Gatekeepers/All that you touch, You Change”, as a part of the NextLOOK series. Abadoo plans for an immersive dance-theater experience for audiences within Joe’s walls that explore what it means to be a gatekeeper within various social systems. This will be Abadoo’s first state-side work after her return from an eight month long research period at Noyam African Dance Institute in Dodowa in Ghana. Joe’s is located at 3309 Bunker Hill Rd, Mt. As a part of her creative residency,  Abadoo is offering an open invite to intermediate and advanced dancers and movers for a 3-part series of dance classes running from May 2-4, from 10:00 – 11:15 am. Abadoo (with help from special guest choreographers from the DC region) will lead technique and improvisational movement practices rooted in Contemporary, West African, and Funk styles. About “Gatekeepers/All that you touch, You Change”

MK Abadoo’s NextLOOK creative residency for Gatekeepers/All that you touch, You Change, gathers DMV-based womyn dance artists of the African Diaspora to explore the roles of artists in communities as everyday gatekeepers. Throughout the residency Abadoo will be joined by local dance artists, choreographers, educators, and scholars including: Holly Bass, Bimbola Akinbola, Tricia Homer, Michele’ Prince, Nicole Sneed, Asia Wyatt, Jessica Denson, Ama Law, Sadiqua Crutcher, and more!

About Meghan Abadoo

DSC_4104Meghan K. Abadoo’s creative work exist at the crux of dance theater, racial justice organizing, and critical education studies. Combining Contemporary, West African and Funk dance styles, her choreographies build platforms for shared dialogue in support of transformative social movements. In 2017 she will premiere a new work commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and begin touring her award winning piece, Octavia’s Brood: Riding the Ox Home. As a 2016-2017 U.S. Fulbright Fellow, she recently conducted eight months of creative research at the Noyam African Dance Institute in Dodowa, Ghana, and with the National Dance Company of Ghana.

Prior to this period she performed for over a decade with internationally renowned dance companies and choreographers including Gesel Mason, Liz Lerman, Urban Bush Women, David Dorfman Dance and the Dance Exchange. As an educator, Ms. Abadoo is sought out for her keen ability to facilitate group learning as unique communities of shared wisdom, and embodied knowledge. She’s worked with students as a guest artist at the University of Maryland, Brown University, James Madison University, East Carolina University, Dickinson College and the University of Virginia.

Abadoo is a 2017 40 Under 40 awardee by Prince George’s County (Maryland) Social Innovation Fund for her leadership and achievement in the arts. Beginning this summer, she will join the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as an inaugural Visiting Arts Fellow in the Racial Equity, Arts and Culture Transdisciplinary Core at VCU’s Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & Innovation.

About the NextLOOK Series

Joe’s Movement Emporium and The Clarice in College Park, MD are partnered for their third season of NextLOOK. Established in 2014, this application-based program gives regionally-based performing artists the time, space and dollars to develop new work with the opportunity to deepen the audience’s interaction and involvement through previews, workshops and feedback sessions.

NextLOOK returns with exciting new line-up

Joe’s Movement Emporium in partnership with The Clarice enters into the third season of NextLOOK incubation.

NextLOOK is a week-long residency open to area performing artists and artist groups that is funded by The Clarice and in residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium. Established in 2014, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by regionally based performing artists.

NextLOOK artists also collaborate with The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium staff to construct innovative methods of deepening the audience’s involvement in their creative process. By removing logistical barriers and providing a sounding board for artists creating new work, NextLOOK invests in the regional arts ecology and creates an accessible, exploratory environment that connects intriguing artists with adventurous audiences.

This season’s NextLOOK artists will transport you to the far reaches of outer space, lead you through the nooks and crannies of their own backyards and let you discover the places and moments in between. Explore worlds both imagined and real — and be a part of creating it all.

It’s the Rest of the World that Looks So Small: A Theatrical Review of Jonathan Coulton

2015’s Helen Hayes Award Winning Outstanding Emerging Theater Company, Flying V, presents this theatrical exploration of the music of cult singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton. Coulton is known for his clever, engaging and humorous songs that capture slice of life moments in high concept situations—from zombie co-workers to lonely sea monsters. Using dance, movement/physical theatre and new arrangements with a live band, Flying V is staging a collection of Coulton’s songs and exploring what it means to be human in an oversized world of possibility.

Ebon Kojo: The Last Tribe

What if a man, struggling against being mechanical, could not accept his son as anything but a machine? Sent from a dying earth, General Ebon Kojo and Ra-7 have been ordered to “recolor” the distant and barren planet Beta-5. Upon their arrival to Beta-5, Ebon and Ra are confronted with unprecedented realities that transform them both.

In this one-man show, pianist and composer Scott Patterson uses acoustic piano, synth keyboards and sound design to weave together a story of space exploration, environmentalism, father-son relationships and social greed. Inspired by the music of Sun Ra and his film Space is the Place, Christina De Middel’s photobook Afronauts and Frances Bodomo’s film of the same name, Patterson imagines his own futuristic world, where sound and music bend the laws of physics and become instruments of creation and destruction.

Threshold

Using spatial dynamics, movement and physical theatre, text, live sound, theatrical clown and improvisational play, Threshold explores moments of transition, from the simplicity of entering and exiting a space, to the profound transition from innocence to experience.

Happenstance Theater engages the audience by bringing curiosity and delight to the idea of crossing over into unknown spaces: the moving, meeting, leaping, partnering, parting, aging and dying that require us to cross the threshold.

The One-Mile Radius Project: Experiencing Space Differently

Public Performance: Friday, April 14, 2017 at 7 pm
Residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium: April 10–14, 2017 

Our human imprint and the memory of our movement lingers in spaces well after we have migrated through them. The One-Mile Radius Project explores these imprints and the unique spaces within a one-mile radius of Joe’s Movement Emporium. In collaboration with Joe’s, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Brentwood Arts Exchange and their workshop participants, Orange Grove Dance will investigate the personal and uniquely traversed spaces of the community. Dance, film and projection will be used to zoom into and magnify the intimate nooks and crevices of seemingly familiar spaces and, in turn, bring those outside spaces inside the walls of Joe’s.

Founded in 2007 by Colette Krogol and Matthew Reeves, Orange Grove Dance is built on the ideals of integrating dance, art, film and movement with all communities, large and small.

Gatekeepers

A gatekeeper – whether an individual or part of an institution – decides which of a certain commodity, be it raw materials or ideological goods, may enter into a social system. These decisions are made within a complex web of influences, preferences, motives and common values.

With dance-theatre as the container, Gatekeepers seeks to unearth this complex web of influences as it relates to racial identity within structural inequity. Drawing from personal testimony, group storytelling and dialogue, this performance will invite and challenge the everyday gatekeeper to imagine sustainable methods of self-reflection and transformational communal action.
