About Dior Ashely Brown and The dAb Band

We are Dior Ashley Brown and The dAb Band. Our work is Hip-Hop which includes the genres jazz, soul, R&B, blues, go-go, funk and more. Our performance not only includes these genres but freestyle Hip-Hop lyrics and live instrumentation. What makes us unique is that we not only write songs, but create full-length sets with free association and live instrumentation.  We use call and response audience participation committing fully to the moment. We are also a female lead.  For decades, in Hip-Hop genre, the female presence has struggled to maintain, and women are frequently under represented within the culture.

About the NextLOOK Series

Established in 2014, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by regionally-based performing artists. Selected through a yearly application process, NextLOOK artists are given a stipend and access to rehearsal and performance space at Joe’s Movement Emporium. These artists also collaborate with The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium staff to construct innovative methods of deepening the audience’s involvement in their creative process. By removing logistical barriers and providing a sounding board for artists creating new work, NextLOOK invests in the regional arts ecology and creates an accessible, exploratory environment that connects intriguing artists with adventurous audiences. Off the Quill brings “Completely Hollywood” to Joe’s this September

Completely Hollywood

rack card

With just 30 days between idea and execution, Off the Quill brings you Completely Hollywood, a tribute to all things Cinema. The frenetic comedy from the team that brought you the award winning Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] has the actors tackling 186 films, plus a screen mashup of their own, in just 90 minutes.

Off the Quill

Off the Quill was founded by four like-minded friends (Patrick Mullen, Katie Wanschura, Leanne Dinverno, and J. Peter Langsdorf) who wanted to create a different kind of theater experience. One that blends many different mediums, like stage combat, dance, clowning, physicality, to present truly compelling stories to the audience. We aim to take classic and modern stories and make them our own, either by writing new material or presenting them in innovative ways.

Ally Theatre Company Kicks Off its First Season with the D.C. Premiere of James Ijames’ Fevered Look at American History

When the Mother of America stands trial, will anyone emerge innocent?

mizwashington.jpg

Ally Theatre Company—D.C.’s newest theatre company dedicated to art that’s designed to engage audiences through acknowledging and confronting systemic oppression in America—kicks off its inaugural season with the regional premiere of James Ijames’ The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington.

Christmas Eve, 1800. The Mother of America, Martha Washington, lays on her deathbed at Mount Vernon, surrounded by the slaves who will be freed upon her passing. In a fever dream of terrifying theatricality, Martha and the rest of America, yesterday and today, are put on trial for their crimes.

“I am thrilled to bring James Ijames’ brilliant play to DC after its 2014 world premiere in Philadelphia,” says Ty Hallmark, Ally’s Founding and Producing Artistic Director, who also will be directing the show. “There was never a question that Ally Theatre Company would mark its debut with Miz Washington, as it perfectly demonstrates our mission to highlight and elevate voices unheard and spaces unseen. Our first production is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long dialogue with the community, both in the Gateway Arts District and Washington, DC, at large.”

A bold, clever, and damning look at slavery, its perpetrators, and its legacy, Miz Washington holds a mirror up to America’s past and dares us to look away.
