A gentler way to move into wellness at Joe’s

Whether you’re a proud card-carrying AARP member, eyeing your “golden years” doubtfully, recovering from an injury, or simply looking for a gentler way to move into a wellness way of life, Joe’s has two gentle classes for you.

Gentle Yoga Wednesday mornings at 11:30 am with Brooke Kidd and Tai Chi Thursday evenings at 7 pm are wonderful ways to work movement into your weekly wellness routine.

Gentle Yoga | Wednesdays at 11:30 am

The National Institute of Health (NIH) tells us, “studies have shown that exercise provides many health benefits and that older adults can gain a lot by staying physically active. Even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of people who are frail or who have diseases that accompany aging.”

Whether you’re already over the hill or contemplating the climb up, working a fitness aspect into your regular weekly schedule can contribute towards maintaining your health and independence as you age.

Tai Chi | Thursdays at 7 pm

NIH also tells, “when older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it doesn’t happen just because they’ve aged. It’s usually because they’re not active. Lack of physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, and more use of medicines for a variety of illnesses.”

No matter what generation you’re a part of, regular movement experiences can help mange stress and improve your mood. NIH continues, “regular, moderate physical activity can help manage stress and improve your mood. And, being active on a regular basis may help reduce feelings of depression.” While a movement class at Joe’s is no replacement for doctor-recommended mental health therapies and medication, participation in a weekly class provides important connection. Connection between you and your instructor, your fellow classmates, and your inner sense of self.

In 2014 Kathy Shollenberger, a regular yoga student here at Joe’s, shared her beautiful movement story with us. It’s so good, we had to share it again:

Over the course of the past year, Joe’s has become central to my well-being in such a profoundly satisfying way.  I had dabbled in yoga for years, but it always seemed a chore—something that I should do because it was good for me.  I never really got any better at it.  But now I relish the hour and a half I spend with Brooke on Monday evenings.  I get out of my day and into my body.  My confidence has grown and so has my strength.  Thanks to some individual instruction from Brooke, even my plank improved.  She suggested that taking Pilates would complement yoga and consolidate my gains, so I did—bright and early Wednesday mornings with Andrea, another wonderful teacher.  The result of these two weekly classes with instructors who provide expert guidance is a healthier and happier me.  Thanks, Joe’s.

Looking for new ways to move at Joe’s? We’ve got two BRAND NEW classes with INCREDIBLE instructors who are ready to take you from winter flubber to a summer beach bod!

A warm welcome to Ty Powell and Monica Brinn to the Joe’s family. Ty and Monica’s classes will be on the Joe’s 10-class pass system. This means if you already have a 10-class pass, it’ll be easy to try these new gut busting and butt shaping classes. If you don’t have a 10-class pass, we recommend you get one, immediately.

MONDAYS AT 6:30 PM
THURSDAYS AT 6 PM

This full body workout is designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and improve overall health. It is performed on a yoga mat, with low impact, aimed to protect your joints and muscles from the pounding of other exercises. The interval aspect of this workout helps keeps your heart rate up and allows you to engage in a great cardio/full-body workout.

Ty tells us, “we play music, I encourage people to dance, smile, encourage others near them, and most importantly, to have fun and run their own race.”

TUESDAYS AT 6:30 PM

Hatha-Vinyasa Yoga and Pilates fusion classes are suitable to all levels, and instruction will include variations to challenge more intermediate students and to develop more beginner students.

If you have never practiced yoga, please feel free to begin your journey here! If you have been practicing for years, please come to continue your journey, and to deepen your practice. Classes will include breath integration, deep stretching, balance and core work, sun salutations, a variety of postures and relaxation.
